About Iqbal

Professor Iqbal Ramzan is Emeritus Professor in the Sydney Pharmacy School at the University of Sydney. He served as Dean and Head of School of Pharmacy from 2006 to 2017, leading significant advancements in pharmacy education and research. Ramzan completed his pharmacy training with a Diploma in Pharmacy in New Zealand and earned his MSc and PhD from the University of Sydney, specializing in drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. Throughout his career, he progressed from Associate Professor to full Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy. His academic appointments include roles at the Faculty of Pharmacy, now part of the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

Ramzan's research focuses on pharmaceutical sciences, particularly the pharmacokinetics, safety, and efficacy of biosimilars and biologics such as rituximab and trastuzumab, vaccine hesitancy and development including COVID-19 vaccines, nanotoxicity of nanodiamonds, and phytotherapies including kava hepatotoxicity and native Australian fruit polyphenols. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers, with key works including 'Safety of Rituximab biosimilar (Riximyo®) following a single switch' (2024), 'Safety and efficacy comparisons of intravenous trastuzumab biosimilars' (2023), 'Safety and efficacy comparisons of rituximab biosimilars' (2022), 'A Narrative Review of COVID-19 Vaccines' (2021), and 'Vaccines and vaccination: history and emerging issues' (2021). As author and editor, he produced Phytotherapies: Efficacy, Safety, and Regulation (2015) and Biologics, Biosimilars, and Biobetters: An Introduction for Pharmacists, Physicians and Other Health Practitioners (2021). His publications have garnered over 1,980 citations. Under his deanship, the school introduced Australia's first Evidence-Based Complementary Medicines course in 2018 and trained Master of Pharmacy graduates as the initial cohort qualified to administer influenza vaccinations. Ramzan held leadership positions as Past President of the Asian Association of Schools of Pharmacy, Director, Vice President, and Deputy Chair of the Australian Pharmacy Council. In 2021, he was recognized as a notable university member for outstanding service, holding the title of Professor Emeritus.
