About Innocent

Innocent Muhire is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Rwanda's College of Education, which originated as the Kigali Institute of Education. He holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Johannesburg, where his doctoral research focused on climate change impacts on agricultural productivity in Rwanda, a Master's degree in Geography from Bangalore University, a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Environmental Management, and advanced training in GIS, remote sensing, and sustainable development. With over 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Muhire has taught and supervised postgraduate students, served as Subject Leader, and contributed extensively to Rwanda's secondary and tertiary education systems. His expertise spans program advisory, project implementation, and consultancy in natural resources management, environmental science, climate change adaptation and mitigation, and related fields. He has led more than 40 consultancies for organizations including REMA, FONERWA, UNICEF, IUCN, GIZ, Enabel, and the Green Climate Fund, with recent projects such as climate risk assessment for Rwanda's education sector, evaluation of the Nyandungu Wetland Eco-tourism Park, and support for integrating national climate commitments into local development strategies.

Dr. Muhire specializes in Geography and Environmental Management, with research interests in climate resilience, environmental planning, sustainable resource management, climate risk and vulnerability assessments, biodiversity conservation, and multi-level stakeholder engagement. He has participated in four research grants and authored 18 scientific papers in national and international journals, alongside several books and consultancy reports. He has also contributed to secondary school geography textbooks used nationwide. Key publications include: "The environmental impacts of mining on Gishwati Protected Reserve in Rwanda" (2021, Environmental Monitoring and Assessment); "Spatio-temporal trends in mean temperatures and aridity index over Rwanda" (2017, Theoretical and Applied Climatology); "Relationships between Rwandan seasonal rainfall anomalies and ENSO events" (2015, Theoretical and Applied Climatology); "Lecturers’ and Students’ Experiences about Using MOODLE in Mathematics Modules during the COVID-19 Pandemic" (2022, Journal of Research Innovation and Implication in Education); and recent works on competence-based assessment in geography education and knowledge co-creation for resilient livelihoods in peri-urban Kigali.
