Professor Ilona Juraskova is Professor of Health Psychology in the School of Psychology, Faculty of Science, at the University of Sydney. Trained as a clinical psychologist, she holds a PhD in Psycho-Oncology from the University of Sydney, awarded Cum Laude without emendations, an MPsych(Clin), and a BA(Hons I). With over 20 years of experience in psychosocial research within medical and mental health settings, she lectures and coordinates undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Health Psychology and Abnormal/Clinical Psychology. She has supervised numerous PhD students, earning the University of Sydney Supervisor of the Year award in the Faculty of Science, and contributes to PhD completion scholarships in the School of Psychology.
Ilona Juraskova leads the healthCARE research group, dedicated to enhancing patient care through evidence-based strategies that improve clinician-patient-family communication, support emotional, relational, and sexual wellbeing during illness, address health literacy gaps, and facilitate shared decision-making. As Deputy Director of the Centre for Medical Psychology and Evidence-based Decision-Making since 2008, her projects include the eTRIO online education program for family caregivers in cancer care, the Navigate randomized controlled trial of an online treatment decision aid for men with low-risk prostate cancer and their partners, and the CoGenT initiative for genomic consent in cancer care. She authored the book Quality of LIFE / Quality of SEX: Psycho-sexual adjustment following gynaecological cancer (2009) and key publications such as Meeting the Decision-Making Preferences of Patients With Breast Cancer in Oncology Consultations (Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2012), An Online Treatment Decision Aid for Men with Low-risk Prostate Cancer Eligible for Active Surveillance and Their Partners Increases the Uptake of Active Surveillance: The Navigate Randomised Controlled Trial (2025), and Interventions to support patient decision making about taking part in health research: A systematic review (2025). Her Google Scholar profile shows over 5,400 citations. She has secured NHMRC Project Grants, including for cancer research (2018), and received the Payne-Scott Distinction for academic excellence (2019).
