Ian Reid is Adjunct Professor in English and Cultural Studies in the School of Humanities at the University of Western Australia. He earned his PhD in Australian Studies from the University of Adelaide, MA in English from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, and EMBA from Monash University. His distinguished career spans several decades in academia and higher education leadership. He began as Tutor, Lecturer, and Senior Lecturer in English at the University of Adelaide from 1967 to 1978, advanced to Professor of Literary Studies at Deakin University from 1978 to 1991, and served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Curtin University of Technology from 1991 to 2001, where he is Emeritus Professor in Education. At UWA, he held the position of Winthrop Professor and Senior Academic Reviewer for the Course Structures Review and New Courses Implementation until retiring from full-time roles at the end of 2012. Reid was also inaugural Chief Executive Officer of Leadership Western Australia from 2003 to 2007 and has been Principal of ReidMac Consulting Services since 2002, conducting projects on organisational development and strategic planning for universities in Australia and overseas.
A prolific author, Reid has published over a dozen books in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. His historical novels include The Madwoman's Coat (2021), A Thousand Tongues (2019), That Untravelled World (2012), The End of Longing, and The Mind's Own Place. His poetry collection Breaking the Surface appeared in 2023. Scholarly contributions cover English teaching, curriculum history, education policy, literary theory, and classroom practice, with works such as 'Framing the literature curriculum' (2017) and 'What has changed in half a century? English teaching since Dartmouth' (2017). His writing has been widely anthologised, awarded prizes, and translated into several languages. Reid received Life Membership from the Australian Association for the Teaching of English for outstanding services to the profession. His current focus is writing historical fiction.
