Associate Professor Ian Lee serves as the Medical Program First Nations Lead at Charles Darwin University within the Faculty of Health, School of Medicine & Health. A proud Larrakia man born and raised in the Northern Territory, he completed his medical studies locally as part of the inaugural intake of students in the Northern Territory medical program. As a medical practitioner with over ten years of experience in general practice, Ian Lee brings a special interest in First Nations health to his academic role. He contributes to the education of medical students by integrating First Nations perspectives into the curriculum, fostering cultural competence and equity in medical training. His leadership in the CDU Menzies Medical Program emphasizes cultural safety and First Nations health outcomes.
Ian Lee holds a position on the Medical Board of Australia as the Community Member for the Northern Territory, advocating for standards in medical practice and registration. In 2016, he was honored with the Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association Indigenous Student of the Year award during his medical studies at the Flinders Northern Territory program, now partnered with CDU. He has co-authored scholarly work, including the 2025 Medical Journal of Australia article 'Fulfilling First Nations health, cultural safety and equity accreditation standards in primary medical education: reflections from a First Nations desktop review team' alongside colleagues Paul Saunders, Nicole Mercer, Maria Mackay, and Madelyne Hudson-Buhagiar. Ian Lee actively participates in initiatives such as the First Nations Introduction to Health program, which provides prospective students with insights into tertiary education and cultural knowledge. Based at the Casuarina campus in Blue 8 Level 3 Room 31, he supports the development of future health professionals equipped to address First Nations health disparities through culturally informed practice.
