Dr. Ian Larson is a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Education in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University. He currently holds the positions of Director of Learning and Teaching and Course Director for the Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Science. Larson's academic interests encompass drug delivery, disposition, and dynamics within the Drug Delivery, Disposition and Dynamics group at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He has developed innovative teaching tools such as Pharmatopia, a collaborative virtual world learning platform, and contributes to courses including Second Year Colloid Chemistry and Third Year Formulation Chemistry. His expertise covers colloid and surface chemistry, polymer chemistry, and formulation chemistry. Larson has led key projects such as STEMMing Effective Study Strategies (2020-2021), Developing Novel Tools for QUality Improvement (DoNTQUIT) (2019-2021), online learning modules in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC), and Bioequivalence (BE) developed with USP-PQM (2019), and the Soft Matter and Responsive Materials Characterisation Facility (2010).
Larson has received numerous accolades for his contributions to teaching and learning, including the American Associated Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Innovation in Teaching Award (2022), Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Award for Programs that Enhance Learning (2024), Education Excellence: Teaching Excellence (2022), Excellence in Teaching: Programs that Enhance Student Learning (2015), and Vice-Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence (2010). His research productivity is substantial, with 130 outputs comprising 94 articles, 25 conference papers, 8 other works, and 2 book chapters. Notable publications include "Development of a Vertically Integrated Pharmacy Degree" (Pharmacy, 2021), "Roflumilast powders for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Formulation design and the influence of device, inhalation flow rate, and storage relative humidity on aerosolization" (Pharmaceutics, 2021), "Deformation of 3D printed agglomerates: multiscale experimental tests and DEM simulation" (Chemical Engineering Science, 2020), "Let’s talk business: The language recruiters use to attract STEM graduates" (Industry and Higher Education, 2020), and "Qualitative evaluation of how a virtual dementia experience impacts medical and pharmacy students’ self-reported knowledge and attitudes towards people with dementia" (Dementia, 2020). His work supports UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 4 (Quality Education).
