Professor Ian Godwin is Professor and Director of the Centre for Crop Science at the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI), University of Queensland. He holds a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland, with his PhD in 1987 focused on somaclonal variation in the plant improvement of tropical pasture legumes of Stylosanthes from the School of Land, Crop and Food Sciences. Godwin began his research career in the 1980s undertaking sugar beet genetic engineering at the University of Birmingham in the UK. He joined the University of Queensland in 1990, holding an academic position in plant molecular genetics. In 2019, he was appointed Director of the Centre for Crop Science at QAAFI, leading a research program on molecular crop improvement with a focus on cereals.
His research specializations include the application of biotechnological tools such as genetic modification and gene editing for crop improvement, emphasizing sustainable production of grain crops like sorghum, wheat, and rice for food, feed, and bio-industrial uses. Godwin has pioneered GM and gene-edited techniques in sorghum and maintains international collaborations on food security and plant genetic resource conservation with partners in Germany, Denmark, the United States, China, Ethiopia, and Pacific Island countries. He has produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications, 10 patents, and two books, including Good Enough to Eat?: Next Generation GM Crops (Royal Society of Chemistry, 2019). Notable publications encompass 'Genome Editing Towards Sorghum Improvement' (2022), 'Genetic Characterization of Adult-Plant Resistance to Tan Spot in Wheat' (2021), and 'Biolistic DNA Delivery and Its Applications in Sorghum bicolor' (2020). Godwin received the Medal of Agriculture from the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology in 2021 and served as an ABC Science Media Fellow in 2003. He contributes to public communication of science through media appearances on ABC and BBC radio and editorial roles, such as in Frontiers in Genome Editing (2023).
