About Ian

Professor Ian Cameron is the Chair in Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Sydney, School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health. He serves as a consultant physician in rehabilitation medicine and was the Head of the John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research at the Kolling Institute, Royal North Shore Hospital, for more than 25 years, stepping down in 2025. Cameron obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Sydney in 1978 and his PhD in Medicine in 1995. He is a Fellow of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine (FAFRM). Earlier in his career, he held positions as Head of the Rehabilitation Studies Unit at the University of Sydney and Director of Medical Services at the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney. As a clinician-researcher, he maintains active clinical practice alongside academic leadership.

Cameron's primary research interests encompass rehabilitation outcomes, disability and injury recovery, falls and fracture prevention in older people, motor vehicle crash injuries, whiplash-associated disorders, and the influence of compensation systems on health outcomes. His Google Scholar profile highlights key themes including rehabilitation, disability, injury, falls and fractures, and older people. He has produced over 600 peer-reviewed publications, accumulating more than 25,800 citations according to ResearchGate. Notable contributions include co-authorship of the Guidelines for the management of acute whiplash-associated disorders (2017), the Cochrane review on Interventions for preventing falls in older people in care facilities and hospitals (2012), research on Physical Functioning Measures and Risk of Falling in Older People (2012), Factors influencing social and health outcomes after motor vehicle crash injury (2016), and A multifactorial interdisciplinary intervention reduces frailty in older people (2013). Cameron has supervised many PhD and higher degree students, contributed to funded research projects including NHMRC grants, and influenced clinical guidelines and injury compensation policies in Australia. Internationally recognized, he received the Sidney Licht Lectureship Award from the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in 2014. He has delivered keynote lectures at conferences such as the Australian Pain Society Annual Scientific Meeting (2021) and the ISCRR Research Forum, and served on committees for the Rehabilitation Medicine Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.
