Ian Bland serves as Associate Professor (Animal Science) in the School of Agriculture, Food and Ecosystem Sciences at the University of Melbourne. He is affiliated with the SAFES Excellence in Academic Teaching and Scholarship research group. Bland holds the position of Discipline Adviser for Agricultural Science (Graduate) and acts as the coordinator for the Animal Science major structure as listed in the University of Melbourne Handbook. His primary research interest is nutrition in neonatal calves. Previously, he was Lecturer in Animal Science and Management within the Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences at the same institution.
Bland's scholarly contributions focus on animal health, nutrition, and welfare across companion animals and livestock. Key publications include 'Dog obesity: Owner attitudes and behaviour,' which has received 133 Scopus citations, 112 Web of Science citations, and 132 Dimensions citations; 'Dog obesity: Keeping the weight off'; 'Effects of sow, udder section and time on colostrum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrations and piglet colostrum intake'; 'Appearance of immunoglobulin G in the plasma of piglets following intake of colostrum, with or without a delay in sucking'; and 'Application of rapid Microbial assessment techniques to characterise substrate utilisation by gut microflora in the horse.' He has also contributed to research projects such as 'Using Infrared Thermography as a Proxy for Measuring Methane Emissions.' Additionally, he has supervised PhD research, including work on pig sensory evaluation through the Pork CRC, and co-authored reports for Meat & Livestock Australia, such as the final report for project B.CCH.1047 published in 2011. Bland was listed among GEM Scott Teaching Fellows in recognition of teaching contributions in 2022. His work demonstrates impact in veterinary and agricultural sciences through cited publications and educational roles.
