Professor Dr. Htay Htay Tin is the Rector of the University of Medical Technology, Yangon, and serves as the National Consultant for Technical and Quality Promotion of Biomedical Laboratories in Myanmar. Born in 1962 in Yangon, she obtained her M.B., B.S., M.Med.Sc. in Pathology, and Ph.D. degrees from the Institute of Medicine 1 and Institute of Medicine 2, Yangon. She completed post-doctoral courses in Hematopathology in 2012 and served as a WHO Fellow in Hematopathology and Blood Transfusion Services. Her academic career includes appointments as Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Medicine 1, Yangon in 2007, and promotion to Professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Medicine 2, Yangon in 2013. From 2013 to 2019, she was also Professor in the Department of Public Health Laboratory at the University of Public Health, Yangon.
Professor Tin's professional journey began in 1989 as an Assistant Surgeon in Teaching General Hospitals, advancing to Consultant Pathologist in 1998 and Senior Consultant Pathologist in 2004. In 2013, she took on the role of Director of Laboratory Services at the National Health Laboratory under the Department of Medical Services, and from 2016 to 2021, she was Deputy Director General for Laboratory Services there. She has led the establishment of regional public health molecular laboratories and currently heads the Regional Public Health Laboratory Network while serving as National Laboratory Focal Person in the ASEAN Health Cluster 2. Her research specializations encompass hematopathology and blood transfusion services, with several international publications in areas such as blood transfusion, parasitology, virology, and infectious diseases. Notable contributions include co-authorship on 'Public knowledge, practices, and awareness of antibiotics and antimicrobial resistance in Myanmar' (2022), 'Whole-Genome Analysis of the Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 Virus' (2024), 'Surveillance of Respiratory Pathogens Among Rapid Diagnostic Test-Negative Acute Respiratory Infection Patients in Myanmar' (2025), and 'Detection of parechovirus-A in hospitalized children' (2023). She has held presidencies in the Myanmar Society of Pathology and the Myanmar Medical Association, significantly impacting pathology education, laboratory quality promotion, and public health laboratory networks in Myanmar.
