Professor Hosam Al-Samarraie is Professor of Immersive & Digital Design Innovation in the School of Design at the University of Leeds, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. His research focuses on digital innovation, extended reality (XR), multimodal and multisensory interaction, and AI-enhanced experiential systems. He investigates the design, evaluation, and embedding of digital and immersive technologies across education, cultural heritage, and industry contexts. Bridging human-computer interaction, design research, and digital transformation, Al-Samarraie develops practice-led frameworks that translate emerging technologies into meaningful, ethical, and inclusive experiences. His work advances prototype-driven methodologies, immersive evaluation techniques, AI-supported design workflows, and interdisciplinary collaboration. He leads institutional initiatives integrating AI and immersive systems into curriculum design and research training. Al-Samarraie has served as Principal Investigator and co-researcher on projects developing digital solutions for various challenges and currently examines cultural and social aspects of immersive technology use and their impact on user interactions and behaviors.
With over 100 peer-reviewed publications in journals such as International Journal of Human–Computer Interaction, User Modeling and User-Adapted Interaction, Behaviour & Information Technology, Computers & Education, and Telematics and Informatics, Al-Samarraie's scholarship has nearly 9,000 citations on Google Scholar. Notable works include 'Educational data mining and learning analytics for 21st century higher education: A review and synthesis' (2019), 'A systematic review of cloud computing tools for collaborative learning: Opportunities and challenges to the blended-learning environment' (2018), 'A flipped classroom model in higher education: a review of the evidence across disciplines' (2020), and 'Challenges and prospects of virtual reality and augmented reality utilization among primary school teachers: A developing country perspective' (2020). His prior appointments include Senior Lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia (2012–2019) and Lecturer at Coventry University (2019–). At Leeds, he leads the XR Research Group and XLAB, is Programme Leader for MA Digital Design Futures, teaches modules like Design for Immersion and Engagement, Visualisation, Human–Computer Interaction, and Research Methods, chairs conference programs, delivers keynotes and workshops, serves on editorial boards, and supervises postgraduate researchers.
