Dr. Helen Wood serves as an Associate Lecturer in the Pharmacy discipline of the School of Health and Clinical Sciences at the University of Western Australia (UWA), Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She also holds concurrent roles as a Research Fellow and Casual Teaching staff within the same school. Wood earned her Master of Pharmacy degree from UWA in 2014 and completed her PhD in 2024. Her doctoral thesis, titled "Exploration of health literacy in health and social care professions education: a multi-stakeholder perspective," investigates the integration of health literacy into professional training. In support of her doctoral studies, she received the Australian Government Research Training Program Postgraduate Scholarship in 2017.
Wood's research centers on health literacy, with special interests in its role within education for health and social care professions students and the provision of women's healthcare by community pharmacists. Her work lies at the intersection of education and healthcare, aiming to equip future professionals to address diverse health literacy needs and improve patient outcomes. Notable publications include "Developing health literacy education for tertiary-based health or social care professions students: a scoping review" (2025, Health Literacy and Communication Open); "HeLPER (Health Literacy Program to Enhance Responsiveness): a study protocol about co-designing a health literacy initiative for university students" (2024, Health Literacy and Communication Open); "Student Health and Social Care Professionals’ Health Literacy Knowledge: An Exploratory Study" (2023, Pharmacy); "What Do Students' Questionnaire Responses Tell Us about Their Language around Person-Centred Care? She contributes to ongoing projects such as the Department of Health and Aged Care Consumer Health Literacy project (2025–2027) and Improving eye health literacy in Western Australian disadvantaged communities (2024–2027, Perth Eye Foundation). Wood's contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), and 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
