Helen Brownlie holds professional qualifications including BA, PGDip, DipLibr, NZIM, and Dip. She has dedicated her career to information systems at the University of Otago, serving as Systems Librarian in the University Library from 1998 to at least 2010. In the Systems Section, she worked alongside specialists such as Mark A. Goatley and Hung T. Lam on library IT infrastructure. Brownlie was actively engaged in professional development and national committees. She became a member of the LIANZA Information Technology Special Interest Group (ITSIG) Committee in October 1997, serving through 2001, and acted as Technology Team Coordinator for the NZLIA 1998 Conference. She also participated in the LIANZA Website Advisory Group in 1999, 2000, and 2001.
Her contributions extended to key collaborative projects enhancing library technologies across New Zealand institutions. In 2003, as Project Implementation Manager for Otago, she helped commission the CONZULSys Information Resources Access Management System (IRAMS) with partners including Auckland University of Technology, University of Waikato, and Victoria University of Wellington. In 2004, Brownlie served as Otago’s Implementation Manager for Voyager and ENCompass systems within the Library Consortium of New Zealand (LCoNZ) and was a member of the LCoNZ Implementation Team. In 2010, she was Programme Co-ordinator for the ANZREG seminar, where she presented the paper 'A new face for Voyager – creating a Māori interface.' Presently, Helen Brownlie is Product Lead Medical Systems in Information Technology Services at the University of Otago, overseeing systems for medical faculties and programs.
