Heidi H. Ewen serves as Adjunct Faculty in the Department of Financial Planning, Housing and Consumer Economics within the University of Georgia's College of Family and Consumer Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. in Gerontology and Behavioral Science from the University of Kentucky in 2006, along with graduate certificates in applied statistics and medical behavioral science; an M.A. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a minor in statistics; and a B.A. in Psychology from Eastern Illinois University. Ewen's research adopts an interdisciplinary approach grounded in social psychology experimental paradigms to explore the biopsychosocial aspects of aging, stress and adaptation, housing, and relocation decision-making among older adults. Her work emphasizes aging-in-place, senior housing communities—including independent, assisted living, and continuing care retirement communities—utilization of home- and community-based services, employing mixed-methods designs that incorporate univariate and advanced multivariate statistics alongside case studies.
Ewen was appointed Assistant Professor in Financial Planning, Housing and Consumer Economics at the University of Georgia in 2014. She has since advanced to roles such as Associate Professor and Program Director of the M.S. in Healthcare Management at the University of Indianapolis and Associate Professor in the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Binghamton University since July 2024. Her scholarly output includes key publications such as 'Assessing stress in relocation using biopsychosocial methods' (SAGE Research Methods Cases in Medicine and Health, 2020); 'Differences in conventional and seniors-oriented apartment management' with A.T. Carswell (Facilities, 2019); 'A Model for Aging in Place in Senior Housing Communities' (Journal of Housing for the Elderly, 2017); 'Variation in older adult characteristics by residence type and use of home- and community-based services' (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2017); and 'Characteristics of HCBS users living in service-rich, service-poor senior housing' (Housing and Society, 2017). Additional contributions cover the administrative approach to death in senior housing (Geriatric Nursing, 2016) and relocation plans of community-dwelling older adults (Journal of Housing for the Elderly, 2014). Ewen is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (FGSA) and a Fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (FAGHE).
