Hans Christian Kongsted is Professor of Applied Econometrics at Copenhagen Business School's Department of Strategy and Innovation, a position he has held since April 2013. He obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of Copenhagen in 1995 and his MSc in Economics from Aarhus University in 1992. His academic career includes roles such as Professor with special assignments in Economics at the University of Copenhagen from 2007 to 2013, Associate Professor there from 1999 to 2007, Post-doc Scholar at the University of California, San Diego from 1998 to 1999, and Assistant Professor at the University of Copenhagen from 1996 to 1999. Earlier, he served as an economic analyst at Jyske Bank from 1989 to 1992.
Kongsted's research employs applied econometrics to explore the economics of science and innovation, examining how universities, firms, and funders interact to create value for society. His interests encompass researcher careers and productivity, gender disparities in science, R&D worker mobility across firms and universities, family and socioeconomic influences on inventive activity, and the role of individual researchers. Key publications include "Lost Marie Curies: Parental Impact on the Probability of Becoming an Inventor" with Karin Hoisl and Margherita Mariani in Management Science (2023), "Beyond Scientific Excellence: International Mobility and the Entrepreneurial Activities of Academic Scientists" with Wolf-Hendrik Uhlbach and Valentina Tartari in Research Policy (2022), and "Experience Matters: The Role of Academic Scientist Mobility for Industrial Innovation" with Ulrich Kaiser, Keld Laursen, and Ann-Kathrine Ejsing in Strategic Management Journal (2019). He has received fellowships including the Fulbright Commission/Social Sciences Research Council travel grant for his UCSD stay (1998-1999), Carlsberg Foundation post-doc fellowship (1995-1996), and Danish Research Academy visiting student fellowship at Princeton University (1993-1994). Kongsted has chaired the Danish Council for Independent Research | Social Sciences (2013-2014), served on the governmental Expert Committee for R&D Policy Review (2017-2019), and been a board member of the Danish Econometric Society (2005-2024). He delivers invited lectures at conferences such as DRUID and Open Innovation in Science, and organizes the 2025 International Conference on the Science of Science and Innovation.
