Dr. Hazel Tan serves as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Curriculum, Teaching, and Inclusive Education, Faculty of Education, at Monash University. With nearly three decades of experience in education, she previously worked as a senior secondary mathematics teacher, head of mathematics department, and educational technology officer for the Singapore Ministry of Education. These roles provided a strong foundation for her academic pursuits focused on secondary mathematics education, STEM and STEAM education, mathematics and science education, teaching and learning, technology integration in education, gender issues in STEM, teacher education, interdisciplinary education, research methodology, and secondary mathematics. Her methodological expertise lies in quantitative and mixed methods research, highlighted by her innovative application of Facebook for research recruitment, which has garnered interest in the field.
Dr. Tan has an active publication record, including co-authored articles such as "Responding to evidence-based practice: an examination of mixed methods research in teacher education" in The Australian Educational Researcher (2019), "Exploring mathematics teacher leaders’ attributions and actions in influencing senior secondary students’ mathematics subject enrolments" in Mathematics Education Research Journal (2019), and "Enhancing survey participation: Facebook advertisements for recruitment in educational research" in International Journal of Research & Method in Education (2018). She contributed chapters on "Transformations of Teaching and Learning Through Digital Technologies" (2016) and "Gender and technology: a case of graphics calculators in the Singaporean mathematics curriculum context" (2015). As Chief Investigator, she leads projects like "Making eMaking Accessible for People with Intellectual Disabilities" (2023-2026) and various professional learning programs on STEM integration, numeracy, and Victorian Curriculum Mathematics. Since 2018, she has facilitated professional learning for teachers and educators in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. Dr. Tan delivers keynote speeches, such as at the 2020 BE-MTS International Research Conference and Writing Researches and Academic Papers workshop, and participates in community events like the Clayton Festival on early childhood STEM. She supervises PhD students at capacity and holds editorial responsibilities.
