Her academic roots lie in the Department of Zoology within the Division of Sciences, where she specialized in fish reproductive biology and comparative anatomy. Key publications from this period include her first-author paper, 'Neoteny or not? The distribution of the hypophysial duct within the Galaxioidea,' published in the Journal of Fish Biology in 2004, which examined the anatomical distribution of the hypophysial duct across galaxiid species to assess neotenic characteristics. She was also a co-author on 'Changes in steroid hormone profiles and ovarian histology during salmon pituitary-induced vitellogenesis and ovulation in shortfinned eels (Anguilla australis),' appearing in the Journal of Experimental Zoology in 2001, analyzing steroid dynamics and ovarian changes in induced eel reproduction. Building on her Honours thesis, 'Oocyte development and pituitary structure in the inanga, Galaxias maculatus,' University of Otago, her work contributed to understanding piscine endocrinology. Dr. Suter provided expert technical support, including radioimmunoassays, for research on Atlantic salmon milt production and ecological interactions between fish and grazing invertebrates in streams.
