Grantley Winmar is a Lecturer in the School of Indigenous Knowledges at Murdoch University. As a proud Ballardong Noongar man from Perth, Western Australia, he contributes his lived cultural experiences to teaching and fostering Indigenous Knowledges within an Aboriginal-led academic environment co-located with the Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre. The school's interdisciplinary approach introduces students to Indigenous perspectives across fields such as health sciences, education, physical sciences, and social sciences, aligning with Winmar's role in promoting critical thinking and social awareness through Indigenous lenses.
Winmar's academic pursuits include a research master's degree in Counselling at Murdoch University, focusing his thesis on the ways Aboriginal families respond to suicide and the subsequent impacts on family structures. He continues advanced studies as a Higher Degree by Research student in the Curtin University School of Education, where his project examines enablers and barriers in the transition from Year 12 to university for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in Perth. This research amplifies Indigenous youth voices and lived experiences to guide improvements in support from secondary schooling and tertiary institutions. A key publication co-authored by Winmar is 'Exploring Transformative Learning at the Cultural Interface: Insights from Successful Aboriginal University Students' (2020), published in The Australian Journal of Indigenous Education with Braden Hill and Jenna Woods. The paper applies transformative learning theory to explore perspective shifts among Aboriginal university graduates navigating the cultural interface, garnering 38 citations. Winmar has engaged in university governance and community efforts, serving as the postgraduate representative for the Murdoch Indigenous Collective and contributing to Murdoch University's Indigenous Education Statements as recognized Indigenous staff.
