About Graham

Associate Professor Graham Hepworth serves as Senior Statistical Consultant at the Statistical Consulting Centre in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Melbourne. He holds the position of Associate Professor of Statistics within the same school. Hepworth earned his Bachelor of Science with Honours, Master of Science, and PhD, all in mathematical statistics, from the University of Melbourne. With more than 40 years of experience as a consulting statistician, he joined the Statistical Consulting Centre in 2000, following prior employment at the Victorian Department of Primary Industries. Throughout his career, Hepworth has undertaken projects across a wide array of disciplines, including medicine, dentistry, food science, education, law, ecology, languages, psychology, plant sciences, and animal sciences. His clients have included state and federal government agencies, small and large businesses, and individual researchers.

Hepworth's methodological research centers on estimating proportions using group testing, also known as pooled testing, with emphasis on both point estimation and interval estimation. He has engaged in collaborative research spanning animal reproduction, lung diseases, plant pathology, cardiac electrophysiology, dentistry, nursing, water use, compost science, ecology, entomology, veterinary science, and neurology. Hepworth has authored 140 refereed publications and maintains an h-index of 31. Notable contributions include work on debiased estimation of proportions in group testing, published in the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series C in 2009, and bias correction in pooled testing, featured in the International Journal of Biostatistics in 2017.
