Associate Professor Graham Brewer serves in Construction Management within the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle, Australia, part of the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. Appointed at the end of 1999, he currently directs the Centre for Interdisciplinary Built Environment Research and has previously held positions as Deputy Head of School (2010-2013), Head of Discipline for Building, and member of Academic Senate. His academic qualifications include a PhD from the University of Newcastle awarded in 2008, which examined attitudes and behaviours of ICT decision-makers in the architecture, engineering, and construction sector and received the Australian Institute of Building NSW President’s Award for Excellence in Research, the Chartered Institute of Building Australasia Excellent Building Postgraduate Research Award, and the School of Architecture and Built Environment Postgraduate Research Award. Earlier degrees are a Master of Science in Engineering (Design of Build) from the University of Paisley, Scotland, and a Certificate in Further Education from Jordanhill College of Education, Scotland.
Brewer’s research encompasses innovation by construction firms and project teams, sociological factors influencing ICT and building information modelling adoption, disaster risk reduction, sustainability in the built environment, and compliance to safe building codes. Key publications feature 'The Influence of Trust on Project Management Practice within the Construction Industry' (Construction Economics and Building, 2017), 'Key Issues for Implementation of Environmental Planning Policy: Construction Management Practice' (Sustainability, 2018), 'Community based initiatives to mainstream climate change adaptation into disaster risk reduction: evidence from the Hunter Valley (Australia)' (Local Environment, 2019), 'Impacts of Culture on Innovation Propensity in Small to Medium Enterprises in Construction' (Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, 2020), and editorials such as 'Construction Economics and Building; A Rare Breed with Fine Pedigree' (2023). He has secured grants totalling $1,570,989, including for disaster resilience projects in South Asia and Australia. In education, he earned an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2008) for advancements in problem-based learning, metacognitive skills, teamwork assessment, reflective practice, and blended delivery. Brewer is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Building, serving on its panels, and external examiner for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors Oceania.
