Gordon Roy holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Edinburgh. Hailing from Scotland, he commenced his professional career at Burnett Pollock Associates in Edinburgh, gaining practical experience in renovation projects that encompassed plumbing, electrical installations, traditional building techniques, and joinery work. He subsequently managed the redevelopment of kitchens and bathrooms across tenanted properties for the City of Edinburgh Council, handling an annual budget of $16 million over two years. Advancing to Space Solutions, Roy rose to the position of associate director, overseeing a team of 15 architects and specialists. In this role, he served as key account manager for prominent clients including Heriot-Watt University, the University of Stirling, Edinburgh Napier University, and Edinburgh College, focusing on adaptations for teaching and learning spaces, laboratories, and offices. He also managed projects for the Scottish Government Estate, with values up to $10 million. His expertise spans architecture, interior design, space planning, property rationalisation, construction management, and commercial relocations.
In 2017, Gordon Roy joined the University of Otago as Strategic Architect, and he now serves as Acting Director of Property and Campus Development, Associate Director Planning and Development, and leader of the Strategy and Planning team within the Campus Development division. With over 18 years of post-qualification experience as a qualified architect, he has delivered strategic plans for the University's Academic Divisions and Residential Colleges, including the Campus Master Plan refresh, Te Rangihīroa College project, Colleges Master Plan, and Health Sciences Master Plan. Roy advises on architecture and design matters for project managers and facility managers, contributing to the development of the University's Design and Facility Standards and Building Information Modelling Standards. His efforts centre on enhancing student experiences, optimising campus facilities, and maximising the efficiency of the University's estate. Roy co-authored the 2022 journal article 'Whakato te pu harakeke: Embedding bicultural principles into a design process' published in MAI Journal, Volume 13, Issue 1, exploring bicultural integration in design processes.
