About Giuseppe

Giuseppe Finaldi is a Senior Lecturer in the Discipline of History within the School of Humanities at the University of Western Australia, where he joined as a lecturer in 2004. Born in London, he earned his BSc from the London School of Economics, an MA from the University of London, and a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence. Finaldi teaches undergraduate courses including Europe to Hell and Back 1890-1945, Britain in the 20th Century, Hitler the Holocaust and the Historians, and Russia and the Soviet Union 1900-2000. He is recognized as an award-winning teacher in the School of Humanities.

Finaldi's research specializations center on modern European history, including Italian history of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Italian colonial history, Fascism and Nazism, British history, the history of psychiatry, and cinema and history. His expertise extends to the history of European empire and culture, as well as modern Italian history. He has authored or contributed to 31 research outputs, comprising five books, 14 chapters, five articles, and other works. Key publications include A History of Italian Colonialism 1914–1919: The Promised Land: Volume II (Taylor and Francis Asia Pacific, 2026), A History of Italian Colonialism 1900-1914: The Promised Land: Volume I (Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, 2025), the chapter “‘Je sò pazzo’. The cantautori, madness, and Italy’s anni di piombo” in «La bontà infinita ha sì gran braccia»: Essays in honour of John J. Kinder (Franco Cesati, 2025), and the article “It is a Fascist Empire. Some points of discussion on the nature of Italy’s colonialism during the Fascist period” (Estudos Do Século XX, 2024). Finaldi has served as Chief Investigator on significant projects, such as the ARC Discovery Project DP0877841 “The Cult of the Duce in the Wider World” (2008-2011, with collaborators including Prof Richard Bosworth and others) and a University of Western Australia Research Grant for “A History of Italian Colonialism 1870-1960” (2007). His scholarly contributions advance understanding of modern Italy's imperial and fascist legacies within broader European contexts.
