He is also Executive and Clinical Director of the CADE Clinic at Royal North Shore Hospital, a statewide specialist service for patients with complex mood disorders. His academic qualifications include MB ChB, BSc (Hons) in Pharmacology, MD, FRCPsych, and FRANZCP. He completed psychiatry training in Cambridge and at the Bethlem and Maudsley Hospitals in London, initiating research into mood disorders as a Clinical Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry in London before moving to Sydney in 1999, where he has been a professor of psychiatry for over 20 years.
Professor Malhi's research employs clinical, neuropsychological, and functional neuroimaging approaches to explore the neural underpinnings of mood disorders in adolescents and adults, with emphasis on their emergence, suicide prevention, lithium's neuroprotective effects, lifestyle and psychological therapies, and pharmacological mechanisms. A highly cited researcher with over 47,000 Google Scholar citations, he has published more than 500 articles, 10 books—including Bipolar Disorder in the Oxford Psychiatry Library (2011, co-authored with Lakshmi Yatham)—and over 20 book chapters. As Chief Investigator, he has led National Health and Medical Research Council Program Grants for more than 15 years and received competitive funding from the Australian Research Council, Australian Rotary Health, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. He has twice chaired the development of binational clinical practice guidelines for mood disorders in Australia and New Zealand. Holding key editorial roles as Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Psychiatry (since 2023), Editor of Bipolar Disorders, and Editor of the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry, he is past President of the International Society for Bipolar Disorders. His honors include the RANZCP Senior Academic Researcher Prize, RANZCP College Citation, International Society for Bipolar Disorders Mogens Schou Award for Education and Teaching, and Distinguished Professorial Achievement Award.
