Professor Gerry McCann is NIHR Research Professor (Experimental Medicine) and Professor of Cardiac Imaging in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Leicester. He earned an MB ChB in Medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1992, an MD from the same institution in 2002, a BSc (Hons 2:1) in Physiology/Sports Science in 1989, MRCP (UK) in 1995, and Dip Sp Med from the Scottish Royal Colleges in 1997. Serving as a consultant cardiologist at Leicester Glenfield Hospital, his career includes NIHR Research Professorship (2018-2023), Career Development Fellowship (2014-2018), Postdoctoral Fellowship (2011-2014), and ESC Clinical Training Fellowship in MRI in Amsterdam (2004). In 2026, he was appointed British Heart Foundation Professor of Cardiology with a £1.265 million five-year award. In 2025, he received the NIHR Senior Investigator award, providing £20,000 annually for four years to support research and training.
Professor McCann's research focuses on clinical cardiac imaging, particularly cardiovascular magnetic resonance, to enhance management of patients with or at risk of heart disease, including coronary artery disease, aortic stenosis, heart failure, and diabetes-related conditions. He leads the Cardiovascular theme of the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre, is immediate past-chair of the British Society of Cardiovascular MRI research group, and heads the PhOSP-COVID cardiovascular working group and East Midlands Cardiovascular Clinical Research Network. With over 190 peer-reviewed publications, exceeding 5,000 citations, and an H-index of 38, key works include the CvLPRIT trial on complete versus lesion-only primary PCI (JACC, 2015), CE-MARC 2 on CMR-guided care versus guidelines (JAMA, 2016), and MR-INFORM on CMR perfusion versus fractional flow reserve (NEJM, 2019). His contributions have shaped international guidelines, such as those for STEMI with multivessel disease. He has supervised numerous trainees who secured NIHR fellowships and awards, and delivers lectures on CMR, aortic stenosis, and diabetic heart disease at national and international conferences.
