Gerald C. Kane is the C. Herman and Mary Virginia Terry Distinguished Chair in Business Administration, Professor, and Department Head of Management Information Systems in the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. He earned his PhD in Information Systems from Emory University's Goizueta Business School in 2006, an MBA in Computer Information Systems from Georgia State University's Robinson College of Business in 2002, a Master of Divinity from Emory University's Candler School of Theology in 1998, and a BA in Humanities from Furman University in 1994. Prior to joining UGA in 2022, Kane served as Professor of Information Systems and Faculty Director of the Edmund H. Shea, Jr. Center for Entrepreneurship at Boston College's Carroll School of Management from 2017 to 2022, with earlier roles as Associate Professor and Assistant Professor there from 2006 to 2017. He was also a Visiting Scholar at Harvard Business School in 2019-2020. Previously, he held positions at organizations including Filene Research Institute, The World Bank, Coca-Cola, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Deloitte.
Kane's research focuses on the social and ethical implications of artificial intelligence and machine learning; how companies leverage digital tools to innovate amid disruptions like COVID-19; success factors in digital transformation for legacy firms; social media for knowledge management across firm boundaries; and the intersection of information systems and social networks in healthcare. He has authored over 100 publications, including books such as The Technology Fallacy: How People are the Real Key to Digital Transformation (MIT Press, 2019) and The Transformation Myth: Leading Your Organization Through Uncertain Times (MIT Press, 2021). Notable papers include "Strategy, not technology, drives digital transformation" (MIT Sloan Management Review, 2015) and "What’s Different About Social Media Networks? A Framework and Research Agenda" (MIS Quarterly, 2014), the latter earning the 2024 Davis-Dixon Impact Award. Kane has received the National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2009-2016), been named an AIS Fellow, and served as Senior Editor at MIS Quarterly. His work appears in leading journals and practitioner outlets, influencing discussions on digital strategy.
