About George

George M. Hornberger is University Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth and Environmental Sciences at Vanderbilt University, where he also served as Director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Energy and Environment from 2008 to 2021. He previously held the position of Ernest H. Ern Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia from 1991 to 2008. Earlier in his career, he served as Chairman of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (2014–2015) and Chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (2012–2013) at Vanderbilt, as well as Associate Dean for the Sciences at the University of Virginia (2002–2006). Hornberger earned his Ph.D. in Hydrology from Stanford University in 1970, M.S.C.E. in Hydrology from Drexel University in 1967, and B.S.C.E. from Drexel University in 1965. His professional experience includes numerous visiting appointments, such as Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley (2006–2007), Visiting Scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey and Stanford University (1990–1991), and Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Lancaster, U.K. (1984–1985).

Hornberger's research specializations encompass hydrology, environmental sciences, and food-energy-water interrelationships, with focuses on streamflow droughts, urban drinking water quality, precipitation partitioning, sediment transport, tides, sea level rise, socio-hydrologic systems, reservoir operations, water security, and freshwater resource management. He is a prolific author, with key publications including the books Elements of Physical Hydrology (1998, 2nd ed. 2014), Numerical Methods in Subsurface Hydrology (1971), and Water Resources: Science and Society (2019). Selected recent papers include 'Drivers and trends of streamflow droughts in natural and human-impacted basins across the contiguous United States' (Journal of Hydrology, 2025), 'What Conditions Support the Provision of High-Quality and Affordable Urban Drinking Water in the U.S.?' (Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management, 2024), and 'Institutional Dynamics Impact the Response of Urban Socio-Hydrologic Systems to Supply Challenges' (Water Resources Research, 2024). His contributions have earned major awards such as election to the National Academy of Engineering (1996), Fellowship in the American Geophysical Union (1994) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2020), the Robert E. Horton Award (1993), the William Kaula Award (2010), and recognition as an ISI Highly Cited Researcher (2000). Hornberger has also held editorial roles and delivered distinguished lectures, including the Langbein Lecturer for AGU (2002).
