Gennady Bachman is a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, specializing in Mathematics and number theory. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1991, with advisor Adolf J. Hildebrand and dissertation titled "On the Coefficients of Cyclotomic Polynomials," published as American Mathematical Society Memoir No. 510 in 1993. He holds a B.A. from Temple University.
Bachman's research in number theory centers on cyclotomic polynomials and their coefficients, ternary cyclotomic and inclusion-exclusion polynomials, exponential sums with multiplicative coefficients, divisibility properties of multinomial coefficients, and related analytic number theory topics. Key publications include "Ternary Cyclotomic Polynomials with an Optimally Large Set of Coefficients" (2004), "On divisibility properties of certain multinomial coefficients—II" (2004), "On the coefficients of ternary cyclotomic polynomials" (2003), "On exponential sums with multiplicative coefficients, II" (2003), "Flat cyclotomic polynomials of order three" (2006), "Correlation in Distribution of Two Linear Sequences in the Residue System of a Prime Modulus" (2005), "On a Class of Ternary Inclusion-Exclusion Polynomials" (2010), and the recent preprint "An Unimaginative Proof of Fermat's Two Squares Theorem" (2025). His work has received 246 citations on ResearchGate. His recent investigations explore a specific number theoretic process that, despite its apparent simplicity, produces complex structures with unresolved fundamental questions.
Since joining UNLV around 1991, Bachman advanced to Associate Professor in 1997 and full Professor thereafter, and was granted a sabbatical in Spring 1999. He contributes to graduate education through service on thesis committees and supports undergraduates by annually organizing preparation for the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition and assisting in coaching teams for national competitions, aiding UNLV's strong performances.
