Dr. Genevieve Elrod is an Associate Professor and Second-Degree BSN Program Director in the Kirkhof College of Nursing at Grand Valley State University. Holding credentials as a registered nurse (RN), PhD, Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), and Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN), her verified research interests center on nursing education. Elrod has advanced nursing pedagogy through scholarly publications and open educational resources. In 2018, she co-authored the open access book Innovative Lesson Plans for Active Learning: Teaching Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice with Susan M. Strouse and Karyn Butler, published by Grand Valley State University Libraries in Allendale, Michigan. This resource provides evidence-based lesson plans on topics including bias, measurement, sampling, and theory, designed for active learning in undergraduate nursing classrooms and adaptable to other health disciplines. The collaborative effort involved support from University Libraries for copyright and licensing, as well as videotaping by Digital Studio staff in eLearning and Emerging Technologies. The book has been downloaded 112 times since its early February 2018 release.
Elrod's peer-reviewed articles include Improving Undergraduate Student Engagement in a Hybrid Research Course, published in the Journal of Nursing Education in 2019, which explores strategies to enhance engagement in hybrid formats. In 2022, she co-authored Establishing Open Teaching Tools: A Faculty Journey with Open Educational Resources in Nurse Educator, highlighting the use of open teaching tools—a subset of OER—for novice nursing faculty to share strategies, address time constraints, and promote scholarly engagement amid quality concerns. She passed the Certified Nurse Educator exam and was selected as the inaugural recipient of Gilda's Club Grand Rapids Young Professional of the Year award in health care. Elrod contributes to university service as a member of the Equity and Inclusion Committee representing Kirkhof College of Nursing (term through Winter 2027), the Teach-In task force, and the Activation & Accountability Leadership Team.
