About Gavin

Dr. Gavin Mount is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences at UNSW Canberra, part of the University of New South Wales. His academic background includes a PhD awarded in 2003 for the thesis "The Problem of Peoples: Global Politics, Ethnicity and the Struggle for Legitimacy," which he later published as a book in 2010 with LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. Mount's research specializations encompass the theoretical and normative dimensions of ethnic conflict, nationalism, international relations, security studies, non-traditional security, conflict transformation, and the socio-politics of emerging technologies such as AI and drones. He has extensive experience in teaching international relations and security studies at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the "Issues in Global Security" course for middle-ranking officers at the Australian Command and Staff College from 2005 to 2011. Currently, his courses include Ethnic Conflict in World Politics (ZHSS3417), Politics of the Great Powers (ZHSS2427), and Law, Force and Legitimacy (ZGEN2215). In recognition of his teaching, he received the Rector's Commendation for Teaching Excellence in 2010.

Mount's scholarly output includes over ten book chapters, notably recurring contributions on "Nations and Nationalism" in multiple editions of An Introduction to International Relations (Cambridge University Press, 2007–2024), "Hybrid Peace/War" in Hybridity on the Ground in Peacebuilding and Development (ANU Press, 2018), and recent interdisciplinary works like "Swarm Hermeneutics" with David Beesley (Springer Nature, 2025) and "Deceive, Disrupt, Disclose: The 3D Model for AI Security" (2024). He has authored reports, such as the Submission to National Data Security discussion paper (2022), and delivered numerous conference papers on topics ranging from simulating world politics to ideological bias in language models. Mount holds editorial roles as a commissioning editor for Australian Outlook since 2017 and co-leads a UNSW Community of Practice on Student Wellbeing. He also provides an annual lecture on "climate change and defence" to senior military at the Australian Defence College, contributing to strategic discourse in security and policy.
