Professor Gary Husband is Professor of Professional Education in the Faculty of Education, Society and Creative Industries at the University of Sunderland, where he holds the position of Faculty Research and Innovation Lead. He leads the development of educational research at the university. His professional background is rooted in social care settings. Husband possesses a Doctor of Education and is recognized as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Prior to his current roles, he served as Associate Professor of Further, Adult and Vocational Education at the University of Sunderland and held academic positions at the University of Stirling in the Faculty of Social Sciences, including as Head of Educational Research.
Husband's research specializations include further education, adult and vocational education, professional learning and development, teacher recruitment and retention, mentorship in teacher education, and governance in schools and colleges. Key publications encompass his 2018 article 'The impact of lecturers' initial teacher training on continuing professional development and professional learning in the further education sector' in the Journal of Further and Higher Education, cited 44 times; 'The role of mentors in supporting the professional learning of lecturers in further education colleges in Scotland and Wales' (2020); 'Contextualising further education governance in Northern Ireland: history, policy and practice' co-authored with Aileen Ireland (2022); and 'Let's decide to do better governing of schools and colleges' with Ron Hill (2023). In 2023, he delivered the 'Education as a Practice of Freedom' as his Inaugural Associate Professor Lecture at the University of Sunderland. More recently, he led a research collaboration on college governance impacts, resulting in 'The Three Pillars of Educational Governance: Shaping the Future through Evidence, Strategy and Inclusion' with Vikki Smith (2025). Husband has contributed guest editorials, such as on teacher recruitment and retention challenges (2024), and presented at international conferences including the 3rd International ProPEL Conference (2017) on 'The Research Interview and Professional Learning'.
Husband plays key roles in academic governance, serving on the University of Sunderland's Academic Board and Research and Innovation Committee. He is a committee member of the Association for Research in Post-Compulsory Education (ARPCE), has edited special conference issues, and influences the field through collaborations with organizations like Stone King and the Association of Colleges, as well as public blogs and opinion pieces on further education policy and practices.
