Conjoint Professor Gary Hoffman is affiliated with the School of Medicine and Public Health, College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He completed his primary dental and medical qualifications at the University of Queensland, followed by a year of post-graduate study in Oral Pathology. His advanced degrees include MMedSc (Surgery) in 1993, MBBS in 1996, PhD (Surgery) in 1997, and MD (Head-Neck Surgery) in 2015.
Professor Hoffman's training in oral and maxillofacial surgery spans multiple prestigious institutions. He undertook four years of ANZAOMS-accredited specialty training at Royal Brisbane and Princess Alexandra Hospitals from 1985 to 1988, followed by three years of post-graduate targeted tutelage in orthognathic surgery and temporomandibular joint surgery under Dr Frank Moloney from 1989 to 1991. He successfully passed parts 1 and 2 of FRACDS. After gaining specialist recognition as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon in 1991, he completed a full-time intern year (PGY1, 1997) and a second year as a basic surgical trainee (PGY2, 1998) at Royal Brisbane Hospital, including rotations in neurosurgery, vascular surgery, ear-nose-throat surgery, and plastic surgery. He then pursued four years of accredited training by the Royal College of Surgeons in the United Kingdom at maxillofacial units in London, Leicester, Portsmouth-Southampton, and Coventry-Warwick, with a focus on head and neck resective and reconstructive surgery, supplemented by rotations in Basel, Switzerland, and Baltimore, Maryland, USA.
In his professional career, Professor Hoffman serves as Senior Visiting Medical Officer in oral and maxillofacial surgery at John Hunter Hospital, where he headed the department from 2012 to 2016. He has previously been Head of Department at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and South Warwickshire NHS Trust in Warwick and Coventry. He chairs the Medical Advisory Committee at Newcastle Private Hospital and is a member of the Academic Appointments Committee, School of Medicine, University of Newcastle. An active teacher, he instructs medical and dental undergraduates and postgraduates. His practice includes head and neck surgery, corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic), cranio-maxillofacial trauma, and general oral and maxillofacial surgery. He is the author of 90 peer-reviewed journal publications, 20 abstracts, and a book chapter, and holds fellowships FACOMS, FRACDS, FACS, and FRCS.
