Garry Chronican is the Director of Otago Pathway – Te Huarahi in the Academic Division at the University of Otago. In this capacity, he oversees the delivery of pathway qualifications tailored for students seeking entry into bachelor's degree programmes. These include the Diploma in Arts, Diploma in Science, and Certificate in Foundation Studies, providing essential preparation for university-level study. Appointed to this leadership role in 2021, Chronican has guided the programme through significant developments, including its full integration into the university and relocation to refurbished premises at the Otago Business School in 2024 after nearly two years of planning. He emphasizes fostering a safe and supportive learning environment with dedicated teachers and staff, set amidst the university's beautiful campus, to help students achieve their academic goals.
A graduate of the University of Otago, Chronican launched his career teaching high school mathematics. He dedicated 32 years to Kaikorai Valley College, starting as a relieving mathematics teacher in 1982 and advancing to Head of Mathematics Department in 1990. His leadership roles there encompassed Student Support Director, Assistant Principal, Deputy Principal, Learning Support Manager, and Director of International Students. Additionally, he served stints as a Mathematics Adviser and Assessment Facilitator at the Dunedin College of Education. In 2014, Chronican joined the University of Otago as Academic Manager of the Foundation Year programme, where he managed operations and ensured excellence in teaching and learning across all facets. His extensive experience in educational administration and student support has been instrumental in the success of pathway programmes. Chronican also contributed to extracurricular development, coaching the school's First XV rugby team to win the Dunedin under-18 competition in 1987, serving as a national-level secondary schools rugby coach, chairing the Secondary Schools Rugby Council, coaching rowing, and leading outdoor education activities such as camps and ski trips.
