Creates dynamic and thought-provoking lessons.
Gaétan Moreau is a professor in the Département de biologie within the Faculté des sciences at the Université de Moncton, Moncton campus. He holds a Bachelor of Science in forest sciences from Université Laval (1998), a Master of Science in forest sciences from Université Laval (1999), and a Doctor of Philosophy in forest management and environment from the University of New Brunswick (2004). Moreau joined the Département de biologie in July 2005 as professeur agrégé. His research program centers on evolutionary ecology, particularly insect succession dynamics. Specializations encompass terrestrial ecology, entomology and insect ecology, ecosystem perturbations, ecological succession, biomodelling and biostatistics, and forensic biology, including forensic entomology, carrion ecology, taphonomy, insect herbivory, baculoviruses, and ecosystem alterations.
Moreau has supervised approximately twenty student theses across bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels, with his students frequently earning awards at regional and national conferences, including at the Université de Moncton's Colloque des jeunes chercheuses et chercheurs. His scholarly output includes over forty peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, alongside more than one hundred conference presentations. Notable publications feature 'Pigs vs people: the use of pigs as analogues for humans in forensic entomology and taphonomy research' (Matuszewski et al., International Journal of Legal Medicine, 2020), 'Predicting the visitation of carcasses by carrion-related insects under different rates of degree-day accumulation' (Michaud & Moreau, Forensic Science International, 2009), 'A Statistical Approach Based on Accumulated Degree-Days to Predict Decomposition-Related Processes in Forensic Studies' (Michaud & Moreau, Journal of Forensic Sciences, 2011), 'Sampling flies or sampling flaws? Experimental design and inference strength in forensic entomology' (Michaud et al., Journal of Medical Entomology, 2012), and 'Advantages of a mixed diet: feeding on several foliar age classes increases the performance of a specialist insect herbivore' (Moreau et al., Oecologia, 2003). He has received the Prix d’excellence en encadrement (2017, $1,000 bursary) for outstanding student supervision and the Prix Bernard-Vanbrugghe d’excellence en enseignement from the Faculté des sciences. These contributions underscore his impact in forensic entomology, forest ecology, and student mentorship.
