Frederick Grouzet is an Associate Professor of Social Psychology and Graduate Adviser in the Department of Psychology at the University of Victoria. He holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from the Université du Québec à Montréal. Appointed Director of the Centre for Youth and Society effective July 1, 2017, for a five-year term, Dr. Grouzet contributes to youth-related research and community engagement. He serves as Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Behavioural Sciences and co-edited the book Self-Regulation and Autonomy (Cambridge University Press, 2013).
Dr. Grouzet's research centers on personal goals and values as the core of self-identity and their links to psychological well-being. He explores the structure and origins of goals and values, analyzing influences from social contexts like higher education and organizations, alongside personal growth experiences such as self-development activities, life transitions, and traumas. His investigations extend to relationships between goals/values and personal well-being (happiness, optimal functioning), social well-being (positive leadership, social justice, intergroup attitudes), and ecological well-being (ecological behaviors). Applying self-regulation principles, he studies health behaviors including eating, sleeping, and alcohol consumption, as well as technology use like cellphones, internet, and social media. Employing advanced quantitative methods—structural equation modeling, longitudinal analysis—and online techniques like dynamic web surveys, his work spans social/personality psychology, positive psychology, environmental psychology, and quantitative psychology. Key publications feature 'The structure of goal contents across 15 cultures' (Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 2005), 'Healthy eating in daily life: the role of relative autonomous motivation when it is difficult' (Motivation and Emotion, 2022), 'Why do individuals engage with the natural world? A self-determination theory perspective' (Applied Research in Quality of Life, 2021), and 'Development, changes and consolidation of values and goals in business and law schools' in the Oxford Handbook of Work Engagement, Motivation, and Self-Determination Theory (2014).
