Great Professor!
Professor Frank Lovicu holds the position of Professor in the School of Medical Sciences within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. He earned his BSc (Hons) and PhD, and is titled Professor of Ocular Cell and Developmental Biology. His research specializes in the molecular and cellular mechanisms governing ocular lens development, eye morphogenesis, and cataract formation. Key investigations include the roles of growth factors such as fibroblast growth factor (FGF) and transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ) in lens epithelial cell proliferation, differentiation, fiber elongation, and pathological processes like epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Notable studies demonstrate that TGFβ induces morphological and molecular changes akin to human anterior subcapsular cataracts, while FGF-driven lens fiber elongation involves microtubule dynamics and KIF20A expression. Recent work maps the spatiotemporal localization of heparan sulphate proteoglycans during mouse lens morphogenesis and explores Spred1/Spred2 proteins in lens and eye development. Affiliated with the Save Sight Institute, his contributions extend to projects on cataract and lens development, including the identification of potential adult human lens epithelial stem cells and regulation of MAPK-signaling pathways to prevent lens opacification.
With over 137 peer-reviewed publications and more than 5,900 citations, Professor Lovicu's work has significantly impacted the field of ocular developmental biology. He has received the Cataract Research Award from the National Foundation for Eye Research, USA. In leadership roles, he serves as President of the International Society for Eye Research (ISER) and Vice President for the Lens section of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), where he is also a Fellow (FARVO). He has acted as Guest Editor for special issues, such as 'New Advances in Lens Biology and Pathology' in Cells journal, and supervises higher degree research students on topics like growth factor-induced lens cell proliferation and differentiation. His ongoing research influences understanding of lens transparency maintenance and therapeutic strategies for cataracts.
