Professor Franco M. Impellizzeri holds the position of Professor in Sport and Exercise Science and Medicine in the Faculty of Health at the University of Technology Sydney, where he joined in May 2018. He earned his Laurea in Scienze Motorie from the Università degli Studi di Milano in 2001 and his Doctor of Philosophy from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering, in Trondheim, Norway, in 2009. Prior to UTS, Impellizzeri was Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Lower Limb Clinical Outcome Research Unit at Schulthess Clinic in Zurich, Switzerland, from 2007 to 2018, focusing on outcome research including clinimetrics, instrument validation, and clinical studies in an orthopaedic clinic setting. From 1997 to 2007, he served as Technician and Head of Research at the MAPEI Sport Research Center in Italy, managing research activities, testing, and coaching in professional sport, sport medicine, and sport science. He currently pursues a Master in Clinical Epidemiology at Utrecht University.
Impellizzeri's research specializations encompass high-quality sport science, including epidemiology, training load, training and testing, research methodology, clinimetrics, orthopaedics, exercise physiology, injury prevention, and performance in soccer. He has produced over 290 research items, garnering more than 26,000 citations. Key publications include 'Internal and External Training Load: 15 Years On' (2019), 'Training Load and Its Role in Injury Prevention, Part I: Back to the Future' (Journal of Athletic Training, 2020), 'Training Load and Its Role in Injury Prevention, Part II: Questionable Research Practices' (Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy, 2020), and 'Injury-Inciting Activities in Male and Female Football Players: A Systematic Review' (Sports Medicine, 2023). As Editor-in-Chief of Science and Medicine in Football, he also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport and as section editor for Communication in Kinesiology. Impellizzeri has delivered over 100 invited lectures at national and international congresses, contributed to program and scientific committees for events like the World Conference on Science and Soccer, and participates in research networks such as the Young Athlete’s Hip Research Collaborative and the International Hip-related Pain Research Network. He has co-supervised PhD students at institutions including the University of Verona and Edith Cowan University.
