Fiona Currey is an Associate Lecturer and a member of the academic staff in the School of Education at Murdoch University. She contributes to the delivery of education courses, including EDN113, conducted at the South Street campus. Her professional email address is Fiona.Currey@murdoch.edu.au. As part of her role, she engages with students in the discipline of education, supporting their development in key areas of teaching and learning.
Currey's academic interests center on advancing 21st-century education practices, particularly in cultivating learner agency within classroom environments. In 2024, she presented her research at the Western Australian Institute for Educational Research (WAIER) Forum. The presentation, titled 'Professional learning as a strategy for empowering teachers to shift classroom cultures to embrace learner agency,' examined the persistent challenges in education systems a quarter into the 21st century. Despite calls from organizations like the OECD to prepare students for thriving amid technological advancements, climate change, and global conflicts by developing their agency in learning and life, many classrooms remain teacher-centered. Currey's study investigated professional learning through peer coaching as a mechanism to empower teachers to enact necessary cultural shifts toward partnerships with students. Utilizing a mixed-methods research design, the work provided insights into teachers' views on peer coaching for implementing change, enhancing motivation, decision-making, and ownership. Key findings highlighted specific practice adjustments to engage learner agency, contributing to broader research on teacher empowerment during change processes and effective 21st-century pedagogies. This research underscores peer coaching's potential in fostering environments where students act as agents of their own learning.
