Filippo Gilardi is Head of the School of International Communications in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, part of The University of Nottingham. He is Associate Professor in Creative Industries and Transmedia and Co-Director of the Institute of Asia and Pacific Studies. From 2015 to 2017, he served as Campus Senior Tutor, and from 2017 to 2019 as Chair of the UNNC Research Ethics Committee. A Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA), Gilardi has earned three Lord Dearing Awards for innovation in teaching and student learning. His accolades also include the Merit prize of the 18th Ningbo excellent achievement award of philosophy and social sciences (2023), 2nd Place Top Faculty Paper from the AEJMC Commission on the Status of Minorities (2024, with collaborators), 2nd Place Faculty Paper Award from the Intercultural Communication Division at the ICA 74th Annual Convention (2024, with collaborators), the 2021 China Social Impact Awards, and the 8th Corporate Social Responsibility Award (2021).
Gilardi's research centers on media convergence, digital business models, global digital platforms, creative industries, digital copyright, transmedia storytelling, and digital literacy. His publications include the edited book Esports in the Asia-Pacific ecosystem, communities, and identities (Springer, 2023), From copycat to copyright: intellectual property amendments and the development of Chinese online video industries (International Journal of Cultural Policy, 2023, with collaborators), Building culturally sustainable communities. Community museums and transmedia storytelling (Museum Management and Curatorship, 2023, with collaborators), and New perspective on UGC, PGC, and OGC: motivating factors of Chinese co-creators’ engagement with international television series (Creative Industries Journal, 2022, with collaborator). With a record encompassing 15 journal articles, 9 book chapters, 6 conference contributions, and 3 books, he leads projects as principal investigator, such as the Ningbo Social Science Research Base on International Development of Ningbo Cultural and Creative Industries (2023–present), Developing a framework for Chinese short-films with international appeal (2023–present), and Ningbo Social Science Research Base on Internationalizing Ningbo’s Screen Industries (2020–2023). Gilardi convenes undergraduate modules including Understanding the Chinese Creative Industries and Transmedia Narratives and Digital Literacy, and supervises dissertations at BA, MA, and PhD levels. He engages with industry via the Ningbo Short Film Festival and local Chinese governments.
