Felicia Harris is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies in the Department of Arts & Communication at the University of Houston-Downtown, where she joined as an Assistant Professor in 2015. She holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Georgia (2015), with a dissertation entitled "Hashtag Intervention: How #BlackGirlsRun is making ‘healthy’ go viral," an M.A. in Mass Media Studies from the same institution (2012), with a thesis titled "Connecting the Dots: Touching the interstices of media culture, society and self," and a B.A. in English, magna cum laude, from Columbus State University (2010). Her scholarship centers on social media's role in health promotion, racial representation, and cultural analysis, particularly concerning Black women's online engagement and wellness.
Harris's peer-reviewed publications include "‘Tell me the story of home’: Afrofuturism, Eric Killmonger, and Black American malaise" in Review of Communication (2020), "Trending Topics: A Cultural Analysis of Being Mary Jane and Black Women's Engagement on Twitter" co-authored with L.S. Coleman in The Black Scholar (2018), "#Blackgirlsrun: Promoting health and wellness outcomes using social media" co-authored with E.L. Roushanzamir in Fire!!! (2017), and "The Necessity of Digital Publishing in Exploring the Black Experience" in Fire!!! (2017). She has also contributed book chapters such as "MULTIPLE PEDAGOGIES REQUIRED" in Teaching Race in Perilous Times (2021) and "‘Good’ Pedagogy" co-authored with N. Barbieri in Critical Race Studies Across Disciplines: Resisting Racism Through (2021). Harris has presented at conferences including the International Communication Association, American Public Health Association, and Association for the Study of African American Life and History. At UHD, she has served as a CTLE Faculty Teaching Fellow, Faculty Senate member, associate of the Center for Public Deliberation, participant in the QEP Micro-Credential Model, and Assistant Director of the Center for Critical Race Studies. She received awards including the Broun Dissertation Completion Award from the University of Georgia and the Diana Fruth Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service (2012).
