Enrico Costanza is Professor of Human-Computer Interaction and Deputy Director of the UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC) at University College London. He holds a PhD in Computer and Communication Sciences from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), an MS in Media Art and Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an MEng in Electronics and Communications Engineering. Costanza joined UCLIC in September 2016, following research positions at the University of Southampton and EPFL. His career at UCL has seen rapid progression, including promotions to Senior Lecturer and subsequently Professor, alongside roles such as PhD Tutor for postgraduate research in the Division of Psychology and Language Sciences.
Costanza's research specializes in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp), with a current focus on designing interactions that enable people to make sense of data and engage effectively with AI and autonomous systems. He investigates user interfaces for machine learning legibility, energy consumption visualization, renewable energy coordination, and AI applications in healthcare and diagnostics. With 3,656 citations and an h-index of 27 on Google Scholar, his influential publications include 'Understanding domestic energy consumption through interactive visualisation: a field study' (2012), 'Mixed Reality: A Survey' (2009), 'Diagnostic decisions of specialist optometrists exposed to ambiguous deep-learning outputs' (2024), and 'SolarClub: Supporting Renewable Energy Communities through an Interactive Coordination System' (2024). As principal investigator, he has obtained grants from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), such as a £675,866 award for 'Towards fault-tolerant quantum computing with minimal resources' spanning 2015 to 2020. His contributions shape interactive technologies for sustainable practices and human-AI collaboration.
