Dr. Elizabeth Stackhouse serves as Assistant Professor and Assistant Chair of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Urban Education within the College of Public Service at the University of Houston-Downtown. She earned her PhD from Texas A&M University in 2018 from the Department of Educational Psychology, with a focus on Bilingual Education. Prior to her academic career, Stackhouse accumulated over 15 years of experience as a bilingual special educator in Title I schools, where she addressed challenges such as the misidentification of students during special education evaluations and supported the needs of emerging bilingual learners. She holds Texas educator certifications in Bilingual Education EC-6, ESL, Special Education K-12, and Spanish 6-12. In her role at UHD since 2021, she contributes to teacher preparation programs, particularly in critical areas of need.
Stackhouse is the Principal Investigator for a $2.58 million U.S. Department of Education Title V grant supporting the Pathways to Teaching in Critical Areas of Need (PTCAN) program, aimed at producing educators in underserved areas like bilingual education to strengthen the Houston workforce. Her research interests center on supporting teachers of multilingual learners and engaging emergent bilingual students in education research. She co-authored the publication 'A meta-analysis examining the relationship between parents’ sexual orientation and children's developmental outcomes' in 2022. Additionally, she led the YTER-TEXAS 2023 team in the American Educational Research Association's READY Program, investigating trajectories of long-term emergent bilinguals in high school with youth researchers. Stackhouse serves on UHD's Institutional Review Board and has spoken at events including vitalvoices and the TXName Conference on topics related to bilingual education and equity in schooling. Her work emphasizes creating effective learning environments for all students, particularly those from linguistically diverse backgrounds.
