Brings real-world insights to the classroom.
Elaine Emmerson served as Head Technician for the Genetics programme in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Otago, School of Biomedical Sciences, from its inception in 2000 until her retirement around 2023. Appointed in 1991 and qualified with the New Zealand Certificate in Science (NZCS), she operated from the Biochemistry building, delivering essential technical support for genetics laboratories and extensive teaching practicals. These included multi-stream classes and full-day laboratory sessions, where she ensured operational success through meticulous organisation and willingness to exceed standard expectations, making her a longstanding pillar of the Biochemistry community.
In 2022, her sustained excellence was honoured with two significant awards. The inaugural Genetics Otago Medal recognised her outstanding achievements and positive influence on the university's genetics research and teaching landscape. Complementing this, the School of Biomedical Sciences Teaching Support Sustained Contribution award celebrated her enduring commitment to facilitating genetics lab activities. Emmerson's technical contributions extended to research support, earning acknowledgements in peer-reviewed works such as the 2005 publication 'Expression of Pax group III genes in the honeybee (Apis mellifera)' in Development Genes and Evolution, and protocols for non-radioactive in-situ hybridisation on honeybee embryos. Over more than three decades, her expertise has underpinned the success of generations of students and faculty in genetics and biomedical sciences at Otago.
