Professor Eiko Mieno serves as the Discipline Head and Professor in the Lifelong Development Nursing field of the School of Nursing, Faculty of Medicine at Oita University, previously known as Oita Medical University. She obtained her bachelor's degree from the University of Tokushima Faculty of Education in the Special Subject Nursing Teacher Training Program in 1986, a Master of Disability Science from Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine in 1996, and a Doctor of Health Sciences from Hiroshima University Graduate School of Medicine in 2004. Her professional career commenced as a Research Assistant at Ehime College of Health Science from 1988 to 1994, after which she joined the Nursing Department at Oita University's Faculty of Medicine in 1996. She advanced to Associate Professor in 2001 and full Professor in 2006, contributing extensively to nursing education and research.
Eiko Mieno's academic interests center on gerontological nursing, particularly dementia care, rehabilitation nursing, palliative care for elderly non-cancer patients, oral frailty prevention, and development of educational programs for nursing staff in dementia care settings. She has secured multiple competitive grants, such as KAKENHI projects for modeling dementia nursing in advanced treatment hospitals (2006-2007), developing dementia nursing programs in general hospitals (2008-2011), and creating educational programs to enhance dementia care skills in outpatient clinics (2025-2028). Key publications include "Developing a Nursing Practice Model for Specialized Dementia Outpatient Clinics" (2025), contributions to surveys on artificial intelligence in medical education (2026), and studies on daily vocalization and oral frailty (2026). She has edited and co-edited books like multiple editions of Latest Geriatric Nursing (2016-2026), Standard Care for Dementia Nursing (2025), and Geriatric Nursing (2025). Mieno received the Ishizaki Award from the Japanese Society for Dementia Care in 2007 for research on ear care in severe dementia patients and holds memberships in societies including the Japan Gerontological Nursing Society and Japan Academy of Nursing Science.
