He holds a BEng in Civil Engineering and an MEng in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Turin, Italy, and a PhD in Water Engineering from Griffith University, completed in 2015. His academic career at Griffith began as a PhD student in the School of Engineering from 2012 to 2015, followed by a role as Research Associate from 2015 to 2019. Since February 2019, he has served as Associate Professor in the School of Engineering, Brisbane, and Lecturer at the Cities Research Institute, Gold Coast.
Bertone's research specializations encompass data-driven modelling, Bayesian Networks, and System Dynamics modelling applied to water resources management, water treatment optimization, the water-energy nexus, sustainable cities, environmental health, and climate change adaptation. His interests include water quality, water and wastewater treatment, environmental monitoring, and analysis. Notable publications include 'A systematic literature review of forecasting and predictive models for cyanobacteria blooms in freshwater lakes' (2020), 'Government championed strategies to overcome the barriers to public building energy efficiency retrofit projects' (2019), 'Fluorescence probes for real-time remote cyanobacteria monitoring: A review of challenges and opportunities' (2018), 'Integrated intelligent water-energy metering systems and informatics: Visioning a digital multi-utility service provider' (2018), and 'Climate change and its impact on the projected values of groundwater recharge: A review' (2021). These works have contributed significantly to his over 2,600 citations recorded on ResearchGate. Bertone is actively involved in teaching and research supervision within his school.
