About Du

Chantal Bourgault du Coudray serves as the Convenor of Gender Studies in the School of Humanities at The University of Western Australia. She earned her BA, majoring in history and English, and her PhD in History and Women’s Studies from the same institution. Her academic career encompasses interdisciplinary teaching in cultural studies, communication and media studies, and gender studies. Previous appointments include Lecturer in Media Studies at Curtin University of Technology from 2001 to 2002, Lecturer in History and Cultural Studies at Murdoch University in 1998, and Academic Director of the McCusker Centre for Citizenship at UWA from 2016 to 2019. She also practices as a Counsellor and Gestalt Psychotherapist at Applecross Counselling Centre since 2020, and pursues creative praxis as a musician and dancer, with industry experience as a filmmaker and screenwriter on projects funded by Screenwest.

Chantal Bourgault du Coudray's research specializations include relational philosophy and praxis, experiential education, post-oppositional politics, feminist thought, humanities/STEM collaborations, place-based and transdisciplinary collaborations, communicative and organisational processes for diversity and inclusion, cultural roots of inequality, eloquent listening, first-person research, and attitudinal shifts for diversified workforces. Current projects involve co-leading collaborative multi-stakeholder processes for stewarding mine closure and relinquishment, as well as investigating loss from climate change in everyday places through ARC-funded initiatives. Her major publications feature the book The Curse of the Werewolf: Fantasy, Horror and the Beast Within (2006), and articles such as 'Upright Citizens on All Fours: Nineteenth-Century Identity and the Image of the Werewolf' (2002), 'The Cycle of the Werewolf: Romantic Ecologies of Selfhood in Popular Fantasy' (2003), 'Theory and Praxis in Experiential Education: Some Insights from Gestalt Therapy' (2020), 'Listening as a Relational and Experientialist Praxis: Insights from Gestalt Therapy' (2022), and 'Navigating Loss and Value Trade-offs in a Changing Climate' (2022). She has received awards and grants including CRC TiME funding for 'Driving Transitions for Closure and Relinquishment' (2022), ARC Discovery Project 'Locating Loss from Climate Change in Everyday Places' (2017), UWA Research Collaboration Award for 'Social Memory and Feminist Cultural Histories' (2013), and various UWA teaching fellowships and grants. Her influence spans academic supervision, committee roles such as Chair of the Bachelor of Arts Standing Working Group, and transdisciplinary efforts on climate impacts and inequality.
