About Don

Professor Don Immel is Professor in Music (Trombone) and Head of Brass at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, University of Melbourne. Internationally recognized as an elite performer and teacher, Professor Don Immel has a singularly diverse performance background that includes over a thousand performances as soloist with orchestra in classical and jazz genres across Europe, Asia, Australia, and the United States. Since joining the University of Melbourne in 2012 as Head of Orchestral Studies and Brass, he has led the brass program, fostering excellence in performance and pedagogy. Previously, he served as tenured Associate Professor of Music at the University of Washington in Seattle from 1999 to 2006 and as Solo Principal Trombonist with the South Jutland Symphony Orchestra from 2006 to 2012.

Professor Immel actively performs with Ensemble Three alongside Professor Ken Murray on guitar and Associate Professor Joel Brennan on trumpet, commissioning and premiering new works such as sonatas by Stuart Greenbaum, with recordings including Return Journey and projects funded for premiere performances in London in 2026. He curated and performed Trombone Hero IV: Inspired by Paris in 2026, conducted Trombone Hero Volume III, and contributed to Lyrebird Brass recordings Apex Predators in 2023 and Tonnerre de Brass. Additional scholarly works encompass Book of Brass, Ensemble Three at Mount Macedon Victoria, and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Brass Ensemble performances like Tubilustrium. His discography includes the critically acclaimed debut solo CD Long Way Home and Together Alone released in 2014, featuring his compositions performed by artists such as James Genus, Cyro Baptista, Romero Lubambo, Nikolaj Benson, Nick Moroch, Gene Lake, DJ Logic, Jason Miles, and Søs Fenger. Through his extensive performances, recordings, curations, and leadership in brass education, Professor Immel exerts significant influence on the field of music performance.
