Professor Dimitrios Georgakopoulos is a Professor of Computer Science in the School of Science, Computing and Emerging Technologies at Swinburne University of Technology. He serves as the inaugural Director of the Internet of Things (IoT) Lab, Director of the ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub for Future Digital Manufacturing, and Program Leader for Industry 4.0 at the Manufacturing Futures Research Institute. Georgakopoulos joined Swinburne in July 2016 specifically to establish the Key IoT Laboratory. Prior to this appointment, he held the position of Professor at RMIT University from 2014 to 2016. From 2008 to 2014, he was Research Director at CSIRO's ICT Centre. Before joining CSIRO, he occupied various research and management roles in prominent industrial research laboratories in the United States, including Telcordia Technologies, Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), GTE Laboratories, and the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC). He is also a CSIRO Adjunct Fellow.
Georgakopoulos's research specializations encompass Digital Twins, Internet of Things, process management, process automation, and predictive models. He has produced more than 170 journal and conference publications in domains including IoT, process management, and data management. His scholarly impact is evidenced by over 24,000 citations on Google Scholar and an h-index of 48, positioning him among the top 200 computer science researchers in Australia, ranked number 87 as of 2020. He has secured major funding, including leading a $5 million ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub in 2023 and contributions to projects such as the CRC-funded supply chain optimization initiative in 2019. Among his honors is the Swinburne Vice-Chancellor's Innovation Award received in 2018. Georgakopoulos engages in professional activities such as keynote presentations, including at the DEBS 2022 conference, and supervision of doctoral students in relevant fields.
