Dibs Sarkar is a Professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering at the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science, Stevens Institute of Technology. He serves as Founding Director of the Stevens Center for Sustainability since 2024 and founded and directs the Sustainability Management MS and dual-degree MS-MBA programs since 2016. Sarkar holds a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (1997), an M.S. in Geology from the University of Calcutta (1991), and a B.S. in Geology from the University of Calcutta (1988). His academic career includes prior roles as Professor and Founding Director of the Environmental Science and Management PhD program at Montclair State University (2008-2015), Assistant Professor and Associate Professor in the Earth and Environmental Science Department at the University of Texas at San Antonio (2000-2008) where he also served as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research, and Postdoctoral Scientist in soil and water chemistry at the University of Florida (1998-2000). He is also an Adjunct Research Professor at Michigan Technological University and Principal of SIROM Scientific Solutions, LLC.
Sarkar's research specializations encompass the environmental fate and remediation of soil and water pollutants, green technology development, stormwater quality management, and human and ecological risk assessment. Ongoing projects investigate PFAS fate, transformation, and remediation in groundwater, soil, and stormwater; remediation and phytoextraction of metals like lead and nickel in contaminated soils; and watershed-scale management including lake restoration and green infrastructure. He has authored or edited three books, including An Integrated Approach to Environmental Management (2016) and Concepts and Applications in Environmental Geochemistry (2007), published over 200 journal articles and book chapters with more than 9,110 citations, and secured over $17 million in grant funding as PI or co-PI from agencies such as the Department of Defense and NOAA. Sarkar has advised more than 35 PhD and MS students and trained 25 postdoctoral research associates. His accolades include Fellow of the Soil Science Society of America (2019), Fellow of the Geological Society of America (2011), Stevens Institute of Technology Educator of the Year Award (2025), Research Excellence Award (2022), and Master of Engineering (Honoris Causa) (2025). He is Founding Editor-in-Chief of Current Pollution Reports (Springer) and holds editorial roles in several journals, contributing significantly to the field.
