She holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA Hons) and a PhD from the University of New South Wales. Her academic career at the University of Sydney spans several decades, during which she served as a senior lecturer and later as associate professor, teaching courses in human resource management and industrial relations. As a researcher and educator, her work explores how workers navigate precarious employment conditions, particularly among vulnerable groups. She has been actively involved in research groups such as the MERCI@Work Research Group focusing on migrants at work and the Sydney Employment Relations Research Group. Additionally, she contributed to public initiatives including the Success Works Partners associated with Dress for Success Sydney, addressing employment barriers for women.
Van den Broek's research specializations include migrant labour in agriculture and horticulture, gender and lookism in recruitment and workplace dynamics, employment outcomes for women post-incarceration, international nurse migration, tele-nursing practices, and union exclusion strategies. Key publications encompass the co-authored book Women, Work and Migration: Nursing in Australia (Routledge, 2019, with Dimitria Groutsis), the article Doing Double Time: Women, Incarceration and Employment Outcomes (Work, Employment and Society, 2021), Perforated Body Work: The Case of Tele-Nursing (Work, Employment and Society, 2017), Great Expectations: Gender, Looks and Lookism at Work (International Journal of Work Organisation and Emotion, 2012), Recruitment Strategies and Union Exclusion in Two New South Wales Call Centres (Relations Industrielles/Industrial Relations, 2003), and Immigration Amnesties in Australia: Lessons for Law Reform from Employer-Sponsored Visas in the Working Holiday Visa Programs (University of Adelaide and University of Sydney, 2019). She has also co-authored influential reports such as Tackling Labour Challenges in the Australian Horticulture Industry: Towards a Durable Future (University of Sydney Business School, circa 2019) and New Beginnings: Tackling the Problem of Lookism and Employment for Women (University of Sydney, 2013).
