Dr. Denita N. Hudson is a Clinical Associate Professor in Counselor Education and Chair of the School Psychology & Counselor Education Department in the School of Education at the College of William and Mary. She joined the institution in 2021 with over 14 years of experience as a counselor educator in online and hybrid settings. Previously, she served as Associate Professor and Coordinator of Graduate Counseling at Indiana Wesleyan University from 2005 to summer 2011. Hudson earned a B.A. in 1996 and M.S. in 2000 from Wright State University, and a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Ohio University in 2007. Her dissertation, "The Impact of Supervisors’ Race and Years of Experience on the Focus of Supervision," examined associations between supervisors’ demographics and supervisory focus areas including professional behavior, processing, conceptualization, and personalization skills.
Hudson brings substantial clinical experience as a clinical mental health counselor in community mental health agencies, university and college counseling centers, and state vocational rehabilitation programs. She has held leadership positions as clinical mental health program coordinator, clinical director, and diversity and inclusion officer. Her research interests include best practices in online pedagogy, neuro-counseling focused on anxiety, generational trauma in African American families, global counseling, and advocacy and leadership for diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. Licensed as a professional counselor in Ohio and mental health counselor in Indiana, she is a National Board-Certified Counselor, Board Certified Telemental Health Provider, and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. At William and Mary, she is part of the School of Education leadership team and serves as an Inclusive Excellence Champion for 2024-2025.
